MultiVersus reappears with more than 114K players at launch

The newly relaunched IP fighter MultiVersus has arrived on Steam with a more subdued launch compared to its 2022 beta. According to SteamDB, it debuted with 114,515 concurrent players, which is a 25.4 percent drop from its peak of 153,433 players two years ago.

Before being removed in the summer of 2023, MultiVersus was receiving a lot of attention. Its beta attracted 20 million players across all platforms within a month and briefly held the title of the most-played game on Steam Deck at the time.

Player First Games decided to take it offline to revamp the progression system and release schedule for new fighters. The updated version, built on Unreal Engine 5, includes a PvE mode and introduces new fighters such as Jason Voorhees and The Matrix's Agent Smith.

MultiVersus is ready for the continued battle

As of now, neither Player First Games nor WB Games have revealed the game's overall player numbers. Previously, WB Interactive president David Haddad referred to MultiVersus as an essential step in the world of free-to-play games.

Despite its significant player base, recent Steam reviews are listed as "Mixed," citing criticisms of the game's pace and its monetization methods, particularly in regard to unlocking additional fighters.

During the beta phase, director Tony Hyunh hinted that WB Games would actively work towards ensuring the game's longevity. However, this was before WB began distancing itself from titles like Suicide Squad, which it had previously highlighted as part of a major live-service initiative.
